Loud Lady of the Month :: Interview with Megan Burke, Los Angeles Lifestyle Photographer
1. Please start by telling us a little bit about yourself, your blog and your businesses!
Hey there! My name is Megan, I’m a sister and a daughter, I just turned 25 (May 5), and I am a southern California native. I am currently working on getting my own photography business off the ground. But when I don’t have my camera in hand, I enjoying spending my free time with my girls or with my boyfriend of 6 years. I love to go on hikes, garden, read, or get my craft on.
Where to get started with photography… I have been shooting family, friends, and strangers for years now. Candid is the name of my game, but I also enjoy nature photography, events, portraits, and a splash of photojournalism. I went a local school, College of the Canyons for a few years and studied photography and graphic design but I didn’t stay to get that degree, who needs one of those? Currently I am working on my website (slow going when you’re OCD about how it looks), getting my pricing set, and reaching out to people who actually want to pay me to take pictures! It’s amazing and scary at the same time.
2. Can you tell us what your favorite things are about your part of LA, and what we can expect if we visit you someday?
The best part about living in LA is being on the coast. It’s hot here most of the year, but who cares when you’ve got it all? Beaches, mountains, abandoned desert towns… The people who live here come from all different types of life and have tons of different cultural backgrounds. We’re diverse and proud! Don’t be surprised if you hear more than 5+ languages on any given day, it just depends on where in the city you are. With our diversity comes the food, and oh is the food good… Taco trucks are #1 (it’s how we do), but then there’s Thai, Vietnamese, Peruvian, Ethiopian, Greek… You name it, we have it.
The people can be a hit or miss, honestly. We are the city where dreams are made or they come to die. You might meet some jaded people but you can’t let them bring you down. Also, expect our famous angry, pedal to the metal drivers. Don’t be hurt when they’re on your ass in traffic, it just happens…
3. As a photographer, do you have any tips for bloggers? What are your fave cameras and equipment to use?
First off, I’m a Canon girl and proud! As for any advise I would give, please take it with a grain of salt because I am not a blogger. I think the most important thing in photography is to be passionate about what you’re doing and to really enjoy yourself, be comfortable, and have fun. Think outside the box. Play around with props and lighting. Get low to the ground, who cares if you get messy along the way? No one’s going to be judging you when you have something awesome to show for it at the end of the day.
I like to keep my equipment simple. If I’m on the go, it’s all about my iPhone. If it’s serious, I have my Canon 5D Mark ii, a small array of lenses, and my tripod. No flash, nothing fancy. I work in post through Adobe Bridge and sometimes Photoshop, but I try not to go too crazy. You can get pretty crazy in Photoshop.
If you truly want to know how to operate a camera, go shoot some film. You’ll learn everything you need to know in manual settings and it might teach you patience the way it did me…
4. What are your other hobbies and passions outside of photography?
My hobbies vary on the day, but I enjoy lots of coffee, drawing, knitting, biking, gardening, and getting nerdy. I have a horrible love for dystopian novels and all things Harry Potter (random, I know), so sometimes I need to talk about who my posse will be when the zombies come or why I haven’t been asked to join Hogwarts yet.
I’m also passionate about dogs. Especially other peoples dogs because I don’t have one… yet.
5. What are your future plans in business and in life?
My plans right now are to get that business I mentioned going, to get my own dog I can obsess over, buy my own car, and travel across the US before I head overseas. I also need to work on building my own personal happiness, self-confidence, and financial stability. I should also talk to my man and get some relationship goals going… I’ll add that to the list too.
6. What's your favorite thing about the internet world? What's your biggest challenge?
My favorite thing about the World Wide Web is its ability to connect any one from anywhere. I have met so many wonderful people online who shared common interests, goals, or passions in life. The internet can be sort of evil too, and that’s fun… Why is that fun?
My biggest challenge is myself. Everyone is their own worst critic, right? I need to learn to let go and not stress about whether I think something I do, shoot, or say is good enough for literally EVERYONE else. You can’t make everyone happy, someone will be let down sometime. I’m also a professional procrastinator…
7. What's your personal philosophy or belief system?
I don’t come from much of a religious background so my rules are simple: Give respect to get respect. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Be kind until you have reason not to. Say please and thank you. Very unlike me, but my boyfriend wants me to write “fuck b******, get money.” There you go, honey.
8. What do you love most about being part of the Loud Ladies community?
I have to admit that I’m not as involved in the Loud Ladies community as I should be, but I truly enjoy the sense of community here. Everyone is so different from each other, so encouraging, and willing to share all of our struggles/joys. Strong, open minded women FOR THE WIN!
9. What's the most important lesson you've ever learned in life?
No one can make you happy, only you can do that for yourself. Other people can want what you want, but they can’t force your hand if you aren’t willing to lift it up yourself.
10. What song do we all need to listen to... right now!?
Spoon – The Underdog
