Why You Shouldn't Care What Friends and Family Think of Your Online Business + Live Q&A Today! (The #3tofree Series)

Have you had 'the talk' with your significant other yet?

You know, the one where you tell him or her that you're starting an online side business that you hope to transition to full-time in the future because you feel that you have something valuable to share with the world that can both help people AND give you the life you desire.

Deep breath. I know that was a mouthful. And if you haven't told them yet, well... what's stopping you? Are you scared they'll think you're crazy or stupid? Are you worried they'll be unsupportive?

If you've said it, what was their reaction? And were you able to accept it without letting it affect your confidence, clarity, or conviction about your work?

Listen, it makes sense that we'd care what our loved ones think of what we do, because we're taught at a young age to please others and keep them happy to avoid conflict. (If you're fortunate enough to have friends and family that support you fully and don't think you're a lunatic for wanting to leave your steady job and pursue something solo, then kudos to you. But not everyone has that.)

For most of us, there's at least one person in our lives whom we feel we need to 'convince' to respect what we do... And sometimes, that person is really important, like a parent or spouse or child or BFF.

But just because that person is important, and you care about them a lot, doesn't mean they should decide what you do or don't do with your life. You can take an opinion, consider it kindly, and move on. Here are 3 reasons why you shouldn't let others control how you feel about your dreams.

And just in case you missed it, we touched on this subject yesterday at our bimonthly Twitter chat (you can catch up here). Make sure you get on the VIP list (hit that button below) so you get notified about our next one.

1. YOUR PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS ARE NOT CLIENT RELATIONSHIPS

First off, your friends and family aren't necessarily your target market. My 50-something father is not my ideal client. Even though I totally love him and respect his opinion, I don't regularly go to him for business advice or thoughts on my work. Of course, sometimes your friends can become your clients (I've coached my 'in RL' pal Lauren before), but it doesn't always happen. They might not need what you offer or be willing to pay you. And if that's the case, you don't need to care how they feel about it. You're here to make your clients happy, not everyone else. That's way too big a burden to bear; don't make yourself suffer.

2. YOUR LOVED ONES WILL LOVE YOU NO MATTER WHAT

Here's the thing. If the people in your life really love you for you, they won't care what you do.

Your work doesn't define you. Even if they don't understand what you do or think it's weird, it doesn't mean they don't like or love you. Not everyone will 'get it' and that's fine. The people that truly care about you will stick around no matter what. Entrepreneurship has a way of showing us who our true friends are.

Embrace the process.

3. YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS WHAT'S BEST FOR YOU

You are a strong, courageous, smart adult woman. You know exactly what you want and need. No one else can determine that for you. When someone tries to tell you what they think you should do, they are usually just trying to help. But the reality is, no one can tell you what to do but you. Even your mother or your sister who have known you since birth don't know you like you do.

You need to tap into your true core and be bold about your biz. But sometimes you need someone who's been there to help you through that process, which is why I've created Three Months to Freedom, or #3tofree: 6 sessions of straight-up, one-on-one business motivation coaching for 3 powerful women (that's it!) who want the freedom to stand out and start serving online. We'll focus on your long-term vision and map out the short-term goals to get you there. Sound good?

Click here to help spread the word about this limited-time opportunity (I won't be taking on any new clients for months after this), or just use those handy share buttons on the side. :) Don't forget I'll also be on Periscope today (in about a half hour!) answering your questions about coaching, blogging, and biz.

PS: You'll want to grab my free bundle of secret resources if you haven't yet. I've included e-books and workbooks to help you #liveloudly in business and in life. I can't wait to hear how you're enjoying them.
